Rai's lightsaber was an impenetrable blur as a pile of molten scrap metal began to pile up around him. He pushed his way deeper into the droid ranks, each step bringing him closer and closer to his target: the shield generator. Now, the Cerean had noticed the others had followed him into battle, each Jedi and clone engaging the clankers in an attempt to draw their fire away from Rai, himself.
He dove forward into a roll, his body moving across the sandy ground. He came up in a crouch, his torso up against the side of the grey, levitating box that was the generator. Blaster fire rang out around him, bolts of plasma streaking through the air. Catching his breath, Rai heard his wrist comlink crackle to life, Adi's voice barely penetrating the overwhelming sounds of gunfire. Did he say heavy incoming? "What the hell could be heavier than this AAT?!" He screamed to himself. But there was no time to argue. Hell, there wasn't even time to think.
He was surrounded, and only by the grace of the Force and his allies distractions had Rai arrived to the generator unnoticed. Gripping his silver blade in both hands, he thrusted it forward, deep into the shield generator. The surface of the contraption immediately turned orange as it melted away, and as the Jedi's blade sank deeper, it finally began to produce a high-pitched, shrill whine as sparks began to erupt into the air. A few moments later, the bluish purple dome of energy began to flicker before disappearing entirely, exposing the droid army to the forces of the Wayward Son.
The Force swarmed around him, it was cool and calming, but there was an electric energy coursing through it that Rai had not felt for a very long time. He embraced it fully, his mind refusing to shy away from the power that was growing within him. He reached out around him, shrinking his presence down to a near-microscopic size. He prodded his way deep into the servo-motors and other mechanisms in the countless droids that surrounded him. He could hear and feel every turning gear and cog. Every electrical signal that traversed a droid's wiring, the Jedi could sense. He thrust his presence into the droid army, in only a few seconds. Now, he grabbed at the internal gears and pulled, ripping out their internal parts with a clench of his fist.
Around him, nearly fifty droids exploded from the inside, loose gears and cogs flying into the air as Rai ripped them apart. Now, he left his cover, moving away from the destroyed shield generator. He stood to his full height: just over seven feet, his lightsaber held in his right hand, angled downwards and away from him.
He stood face to face with the tank, its large central gun aimed directly at his feet. Rai smiled, "Showtime."
Drez and his fellow clone troopers continued to rain down laser bolts onto the oncoming waves of battle droids. Dropping them was so easy they almost forgot how stupid battle droids are and how bad their aim could be. However, they were well aware that even the stupidest of droids could get a lucky shot on any one of them. For that reason, they weren't too keen on leaving their strategic locations unless the droids were able to flank around.
Ridge tossed a thermal detonator as far as he could into the waves of droids to eliminate as many droids as he can. A few seconds later, the thermal detonator exploded and eliminated at least 6 droids around it. It was a joy for them to watch the droids fly off to their destruction. Unfortunately for them, the droids behind the front line began targeting the troopers. "Ah blast it!" Ridge shouted as he hid behind a boulder, sparks flying around him from the laser bolts hitting the cover.
Many droids had began focusing their fire on the area the group had been camping at, so Izmar switched his blaster to the anti-armor grenade launcher mode by attaching the necessary attachments and fired a grenade below. When the grenade hit the ground, the blast radius was unusually big that it immediately took out a dozen battle droids. "Hah! Can't stop loving this weapon." Izmar commented as he loaded another grenade into the attachment.
"Watch out for that Jedi though. We don't want to accidentally take him out too." Ghost said as he reloaded his blaster. They had noticed the Cerean Jedi making his way to the AAT, obviously targeting it.
"Scanners are indicating that the shield is still up on that tank." Kano informed them, as he took a few shots at the tank just to make sure.
With his quick thinking, Drez pulled out an EMP grenade and a grappling hook. "Hold on, I think I got an idea." He said as he left his cover to be closer to the AAT, dodging laser bolts as he dove behind other cover yards away. He attached the grappling hook to his rifle and tied a small piece around the EMP grenade. He knew he was going to have to be quick if he was going to successfully pull this off as some droids were firing at his location. He took a deep breath then swiftly rose out of cover, activated the EMP grenade, and shot the grappling hook at the AAT. He steadied the rifle as the the grappling hook made its way to the AAT, which was literally less than three seconds. Upon sticking to the hull of the AAT, the EMP detonated on impact, eliminating the AAT's shield effectively immediately. YES! Drez thought as he swiftly dove back down to cover, hoping the grenade didn't affect the Cerean Jedi as he had noticed the Jedi standing right in front of the AAT when he shot the grappling hook.
As Rai continued to keep the attention of most of the clankers Echo and I made our way to a flanking position opposite of where I noticed Drez and his squad was at. As we took cover from the B-1's fire for a second I turned to Echo, "I was always curious what the inside of those AATs looked like. how about you?"
"You're seriously thinking about trying to commandeer that tank aren't you?" He asked with excitement building in his voice, to which I nodded.
"Since droids like to keep their tanks behind their soldier lines, we should be open to get around it."
"I'd check your information again Dogma, there is at least another formation of twenty droids behind that tank."
"Easy, we still have poppers don't we?" I asked, smiling from beneath my helmet.
"Oh right. Easy pickings." Confirmed Echo as he drew out two EMP grenades.
I followed suite and we both primed and threw them at the formation of droids behind the tank. The low yield EMP grenades did the trick perfectly, shorting all circuits of all twenty close standing droids clearing our path. We made our way to the back of the AAT where Echo pulled out a couple thermals, "Change of plans: let's blow this tin can open." He exclaimed.
That's when I heard a *THUNK*, "What the-" followed by a loud buzzing sound, "That wasn't my EMP." I said surprised by the sounds.
"It's Drez and his squad." Stated Echo pointing at their position. "Enough, waiting around lets blow the back off this thing!!"
I could tell he was getting fired up from the thought of explosions, "Set them for three tics and we will book it back to cover."
"On the count of three. One. Two. Three!" Counted Echo, before we primed our thermals and sprinted away from the AAT. A second after we cleared the blast radius the timers went off dealing unknown damage to the tank as we dove for cover.
"Now THAT was thrilling!!" Yelled Echo after we landed.
"Try it again!" Fritz called out from under the floor panels to Raxanna, they had stopped a bunch of electrical shorts and sparking, replaced a couple parts that she had on standby for emergency repairs. He heard the engines start to rev up before dying again. "Kriff! What else do we need to do to get this hunk of junk back into the air?!" Yelled the frusterated clone pilot. "Raxanna you got any ideas?! I'm getting ready to lace this thing with explosives and walk away!!"
Loki groaned inwardly as the sudden battle raged around him. "Morons, they're all morons." Loki muttered watched as above Vulture droids blew up thanks to Adi's armor. "You're going to muck up space time you idiots! And before too long half the Jedi in the galaxy will know we're here!" He yelled at the nearest troopers. Meanwhile on the ship Raxxie had decided that the landing gear could wait when she saw the battle outside. Inwardly she was alarmed to see so many weird looking droids marching towards them. She turned away from the side view port and reattached a power coupling she'd been repairing. "FRITZ! hit the switch!" She bellowed as sparks flew near by from a different coupling and she hit it with the nearest tool until it stopped.
Loki was finally in range of some of the droids. Fighting them clinically, he got no pleasure killing droids, no battle lust, he could not feel the thrill, just hack slash, deflect slash. No thrill, no power just dismantling hardware that's all it was. He didn't dare to use any force abilities, he was far to powerful, and the legendary Jedi nearby would surely sense any display of power he exhibited, all he needed was to end up at the end of their sabers, or else in chains before the senate. A sudden, awful idea struck Loki, what if he could kill Sev Palpatine, before he turned Anakin, before order sixty six, maybe that would stop the plague happening in the future. He pushed the thought away. "Time isn't to be meddled with..Not for any gain." He said to himself, watching as the main tank aimed at Rai. Loki noticed some specks in the distance, and realized with dismay that more vulture droids where incoming, he didn't see any republic ships or fighters chasing them, so clearly the enemy droids had called in another air strike. Loki still felt no thrill, nothing, but he looked around and didn't see anything he could use to destroy them.
Back on the wayward son Raxxie had a few more systems up and running while she waited for Fritz, including life support and the ramp hydraulics they should be airborne in a few more minutes and out of here..If the hyperdrive worked, then a sudden realization hit her..If what Loki had bellowed is true, the star maps she had where all wrong, nothing would be in the right place...Every jump they made would be blind. She bit back her panic. She'd worry about that when and if she got the ship up and running again.
His muscles tensed and he jumped into the air, a second before the canon erupted, spewing a massive red bolt of energy searing into the ground where the Cerean had just stood. The ground underneath Rai exploded into dirt and dust, and the concussive wave aided Rai in his ascension into the air. He flipped once and came down to land on top of the tank just as the shield protecting the metallic body lifelessly flickered away.
"Perfect timing." He thought as he bent down to open the hatch leading to the belly of the beast. Out of the corner of his eye, he was distracted by a flurry of motion. Turning to retaliate against what he expected would be advancing droids, the Cerean saw Dogma and Echo sprinting away and diving for cover. Below him was the unmistakable sight of the blinking red lights.
"Kriff..." And again, he launched himself into a backflip, wrapping himself with the Force. A bubble of blue quickly enveloped him as the detonators went off. From inside the bubble, it sounded as if he was underwater. The explosion sounded distant and muddied, but he felt it all the same. Within an instant, Rai was engulfed in fire, the orange and yellow flames wrapping around his Force bubble, just a foot from his own flesh. The force knocked his jump off balance and he was sent crashing into the ground, his bubble disappearing upon impact. He crashed hard, and the air was forcefully knocked from his lungs as he was thrown across the hard terrain like a limp rag doll.
He came to a stop, and Rai laid still, stars dancing mischievously across his vision. The sounds of gunfire around him were muffled and his head swam. He sat up, unaware of the events transpiring around him, his hand gingerly rubbing at his forehead. "Jesus, Dogma!" He yelled above the noise of battle, "You try to blow me up and steal my kill all with the same grenade! I thought we were friends...."
The sound of his amplified voice drew the attention of a number of B1 battle droids and three B2s. As they turned to face the sitting Jedi, Rai's eyes went wide with shock and he threw his hands in the air, "Oh come on!" The droids open fired and Rai covered his hands with his arms as he scrambled to his feet. Dust and dirt flew into the air as the bolts narrowly missed their mark as Rai ran against them laterally, approaching the hilt of his lightsaber that he had lost during the explosion. With a flick of his finger, the hilt spun into the air and he caught it in a reverse grip, the silver blade igniting with a snap-hiss. Drawing a sideways figure eight with his wrist, Rai intercepted the second volley of blaster fire, swatting the bolts back to their senders. He raised his left wrist to his mouth and screamed into his comlink, "Fritz, I hope you have some good news!"
The sound of blaster fire- foot steps muffled by the desert sand. The thrill of the force, so bright- like stars, pure and deep and potent. Though far off in the distance, the signatures of such strong Jedi made Anna think of Master Alora- but even she paled in comparison. The small Jedi's form VII technique made Anna consider creator of the form- and how close they were right now in the universe. Anna wondered what Raven would think if she knew the Seer had been on the same planet as Master Windu- while he was still alive. A thin smirk tugged at the young girl's lips as she rubbed her thumb against her familiar lightsaber and felt her feet hit the padded sand. She tightened her muscles- ready to spring into action, until Loki's call hit her.
The thought had came to her also. The pats was a fragile thing. While the future had yet to impact their current time line- the past, well it was very easy to change. She lifted her lightsaber- the sand spun- the world spun. Her organic, cybernetic eyes darted here and there until Anna simply had to close them and let the force take over. Perhaps that would still her mind- and her sudden dizziness-
It didn't.
Her closed eyelids gave way to the force- and suddenly there was no battle droids- there were only empty sand dunes, and long covered ruins of such a battle. She turned in a slow calculated circle, as if oblivious to the laser fire so close to them. A nonexistent, futuristic wind blew back some sand- revealing a strange chunk of metal that didn't fit with the rest of the mostly burred war ruins. And then she saw it, only part of it, but the familiar insignia of the Wayward Son- only old, mostly buffeted clean by constantly whipping sand.
She snapped her eyes opened and flattened herself against the ground as the sudden image of laser flashes and battle droids flashed into her vision again. Their ship- right near her, no longer embraced by sand. She felt that strange sensation again- like before- like the force was tugging at her- at all of them, trying to pull them back into their timeline. Loki's words rang true. If her vision...of the present- was true, maybe they never made it off Geonosis. Maybe they left a piece of their lives behind in the form of the Wayward Son. She felt Rai's force reaching out, pushing him forward- shining like a beacon to anyone who could sense it. And those others far off- she was sure they would eventually feel it, as the Zabrak had warned.
Slowly, she stood up and staggered back to the safety of the ship. She couldn't fight like this. Reality continued to shift in front of her and she couldn't even trust the force to guide her right now.
They won't listen... Loki.
Making her way inside the ship- she sought out Raxxy and Fritz. She tried to approach as steadily as possible- but every step she took felt like it made the whole ship tilt.
"Hey... is there a way- a way to use the coms to contact only our people?...
She wasn't sure what kind of response she would get- she was sure they were very busy, but she wasn't about to reach out through the force to say anything to anybody- and some things needed to be said before... before her vision became an unfortunate reality.
The answers are always in the back of the book- so thta's where I start reading.
The current wave of battle droids' numbers were dwindling, though it was no reason to let up off the trigger. This was the First Battle of Geonosis after all. There were at least 1 million battle droids in the battle, not to mention they were only facing a few hundred of those few million droids. Reinforcements were bound to be on their way to the current position sooner rather than later. The question is: Will the ship be up and running before the reinforcements arrive or will Drez have to hijack a ship to get off the planet?
Thinking of that idea, Drez actually enjoyed hijacking ships. They were never going to be considered his anyways, so he didn't care if he crash landed or wrecked a hijacked ship, as long as it served the required purpose. Though to his knowledge, most of the ships belonging to the CIS weren't viable for human transport, but rather viable for mostly transporting droids. The ships that could transport them though would be deep behind enemy lines, mostly where battle commanders would be.
However, another idea popped up into his head. They could stowaway onto one of the Republic's Venator cruisers, since he knew that the Venators would travel to Coruscant right after Geonosis to present the new Clone Army to the Galactic Senate and Chancellor Palpatine.
"Look guys, we have two options if that junker doesn't get running. A: We could hijack a separatist shuttle or B: we could hitchhike on a Republic cruiser." Drez said through his commslink, relaying the message to his squad, Dogma's squad, and any of the other Force users with commslinks who happened to be on the Wayward Son.
“Well, I saw an opportunity and I took it. And you seemed so self-destructive since Honoghr that I was curious how far you’d go!” I yelled back at Rai, who was complaining about Echo’s and my handy work. The B-1’s soon located us and started firing at our hiding spot.
“Kriff! Take this clankers!” Yelled Echo as he tossed a thermal detonator in the group of eight droids. The droids stupidly watched as the grenade stuck in the sand at their feet. Seconds later it detonated quickly destroying all of them.
That was when Drez contacted us over commlink, I thought about our options and was about to ask Fritz where he a was with repairing the ship when I heard engines roar to life, “Looks like we are taking the battered box outta here boys.” I replied to Midnight Squad’s leader. I then turned to Echo, “We need to head back. If those droids get smart and call for reinforcements before we get out of here, we are screwed.”
“Copy that Dogma.”
We quickly left our foxhole and ran toward Rai, “Let’s go, Fritz and Raxanna got the Son working again.”
“We got it working Raxanna!! I don’t know what you did back there but it’s finally alive! Now maybe we can get off this miserable planet. I could do with never seeing this place again.” Fritz shouted excitedly from the co-pilot’s chair. He then proceeded to start the pre-flight procedures to get them in the sky as soon as everyone made it back to the ship. “If Loki was right about us being in the past, then hopefully we did not disturb it too much with the landing and whatever everyone was doing outside.” Fritz talked to himself and anyone that may have been near the cockpit.
“Roxanna, gonna need you up here to get this bucket of bolts into the sky.” He didn’t mean to insult the ship, but he was annoyed that it had taken them this long to get it started again. Even if a lot of the systems turned out to be simple and familiar to work on. He hoped the female Zabrak didn’t take too much offense at it, after he remembered that this ship probably belonged to her.
Loki saw the ship flare to life, the few remaining droids where soon dispatched by the troopers and Rai. "Fall back!" Loki bellowed as he began sprinting towards the Son, he flew up the ramp past Adi and the others and ran towards the quad cannon station. Now that the ship was live he threw up a brief prayer to Bogan and Ashla for good measure that the cannon would be online too.
Raxnna smiled as the ship roared to life. "Good, and stop insulting the ship." Before she ran to the cockpit she looked at the ramp panel and popped it off, luckily the connection was just loose, quickly reconnecting it she ran to the cockpit and began flipping switches and adjusting fuel mixtures, they had enough juice left for one jump. They'd have to make it count, but they could get far away from the erupting battle here on Geonosis.
Loki slid into the recently installed oversized seat of the quadcannon and brought the view-set down over his eyes. This let him control the gun using a mixture of the force and his own eyesight, his hands on the triggers. Then he remembered the gun was facing the wrong way. He looked towards the others and urged them to hurry back to the ship mentally.
With a final bat of his lightsaber, Rai sent a crimson bolt flying back into the last remaining battle droid. The plasma charge drove into the metal chest and it fell lifeless to the ground. He turned his attention to Dogma and Echo, who were coming to join him, and he deactivated his lightsaber. Forcing a smile, he panted, "That wasn't so bad. Didn't even break a sweat."
Hooking the leather hilt to his belt he clapped both of the clones on their shoulders as he walked between them as they returned to the operational ship, "Next time, we'll have to see who downs the most clankers, but I don't want to bruise Echo's ego too much."
"You've really let yourself go."
"What do you mean by that?"
"You're panting and your lower back is all sweaty, you big liar."
"I don't know what you're talking about....."
"Mhm. Don't worry, I won't tell them."
Rai rolled his eyes as he and the two clones entered the ship, making their way to the main seating area.
Drez and his squad of clone troopers retreated to the junker ship they had recently crashed landed with, firing their weapons behind them as they went. As they entered the Wayward Son, each trooper hoped that the ship can at least make it off the planet and not crash land again. They quickly made their way to the passenger hold and immediately strapped themselves in, though they had their jetpacks fully charged and ready for a quick escape if needed.
"Hey, I'm just saying. If this junker loses power and we are about to crash land, we're jumping out." Drez said loud enough to whoever was supposed to be piloting the shuttle to make sure everyone heard. He knew he was going to piss off somebody with that, which he was fine with. Sometimes, having some banter on the battlefield can take some of the edge and tension off.
This wasn't his ship, but Fritz wasn't happy with how Drez complained about it after he and Raxanna had spent the entire time peicing it back together after saving them all. "Just sit back and pray I don't put you out the airlock Drez. I didn't see you trying to fix this ship!" He yelled back. He was proud of the work he and the Zabrak had done in such a short time after the crash, making the ship flyable and all.
I walked with Rai and Echo back to the Wayward Son, engines roaring with life. This skirmish had been short, but needed to let some steam off, "Go on inside, I want to make sure everyone got on." I told the two as I turned to look at the mess of battle droids and AAT we left behind. A quick jog, and look around later confirmed that everyone had gotten back on our ship. I didn't know much about these time travel rules that Loki had been yelling about before, but I was pretty sure we hadn't left anything laying around from our time.
I jogged back to the ship and up the ramp, closing it behind me, "Fritz, she's all buttoned up. Let's get off this blasted rock of a planet." I called toward the front of the ship. My reply came with the noticable movement of the ship and I made my way to the common area where I found most everyone sitting, standing, or otherwise relaxing. I walked over to the fridge, pulled out a canteen of water, sat down and made myslef at home. "Hopefully this trip is alot smoother than the last one. Am I right?" Echo joked to everyone in the room.
