—Sabrin Desma- a runaway Sith who learned about the coming cataclysm. Fearing what it would do, she abandoned her Sith order.
—Cleigh Piell, a Jedi master in his 50s. His whole life has been dedicated to the Jedi code. He’s invested his time studying the Jedi masters of old, before the dark times.
—BEK’S BIOGRAPHY: Raised on Dantooine, his family has been ravaged by a genetic sickness passed down from many generations on his father’s side. It is ever present and strikes unpredictably. It can skip generations and strike early or later in life. There is hardly any warning and there is no cure. All bodily functions shut down and the sick perish within weeks.
Because of this disease, his family is low in social hierarchies and are impoverished. They work labor intensive jobs that are physically demanding. His childhood was spent in fields where he was prone to serious injuries and sun damage from unprotective clothing. By the time he hit his teens he fell ill to the disease and collapsed while working. He spent a couple of days in bed before his mother collapsed the same way. His condition improved as hers worsened. She passed a week later. It was discovered the disease claimed her, although it should have been impossible for her to carry it genetically. As equally impossible that he survived it. This labeled the teen as cursed. All relatives, with little exception to his father, disowned him.
He continued working until a stranger appeared to them. A tall, slim, human, female with yellow eyes, a few years older than Bek. She came to Dantooine in search of shelter. The family’s low stature allowed her to hide from whatever she was running from. In return for shelter she agreed to work with the family and assisted in the hard labor. She introduced herself as Sabrin Desma. She claimed to be from a nearby outer rim planet and fell on hard times that forced her to leave her planet.
Despite her size, she was more capable to work than everyone else. This frightened everyone except Bek, who was the only one who did not avoid her. Identifying with Bek as someone else who was exiled, Sabrin relied on him for social interactions and to learn the area. Learning about the genetic disease, the teen’s survival, and the demise of his mother, Sabrin became fascinated with Bek. She put him through a series of tests to reveal he was force sensitive. She theorized his survival was due to a form of vitality drain, a survival instinct the teen did not seem aware of: Unaware he killed his mother in order to survive.
Eventually she begins to explain force abilities to Bek. Seeing his capabilities and unable to train him on Dantooine, she uses force persuasion on his father to release Bek to her. Exiled and excited about learning his abilities, Bek eagerly agrees to leave with her.
For the next 7 years, Bek went through trials more physically demanding than the labor of Dantooine. Training under Sabrin, traveling to nearby planets with harsh environments, Bek had to rely on his training for survival. As he reached adulthood, Bek and Sabrin formed a romantic relationship, changing from a master and apprentice relationship into being near equals, partners. The two were prepared to join in marriage when two strangers appeared. They approached Bek and Sabrin with what looked like vibro blades, glowing in blue and green. Weapons Bek had never seen before. In the same fashion, Sabrin drew a similar weapon that glowed a crimson from either end. The three clashed in a quick battle as Bek watched in horror. With no weapon of his own, all he could do was reach out with his hands and push the two aggressors through the force. This allowed Sabrin to escape: She fled to her shuttle and left Bek to the aggressors.
The two captured Bek and placed him in stun cuffs, bringing him to their world where he was interrogated. Bek had learned the truth of the force, that there is a light and dark side. That his master was a dark user, known as a Sith; that his captors were the light, known as Jedi. He learned the history of the force, of the Jedi and Sith, lessons his master never taught him. He hated his master for holding so much back from him.
The two introduced themselves as Osahna Tubar and Cleigh Piell, padawan and master. After their successful capture but failed mission, Osahna was placed forward to become a Knight. Despite his age and experience, Bek showed promise to be capable of learning the Jedi way; Cleigh becoming his master and Bek his padawan.
Five years have passed with no sign of his former master. Bek had constructed his first lightsaber. During this time he developed his combat style, constructing an identical saber for his other hand.
The cataclysm has occurred and rumors of his former master have surfaced. She’s taken on another apprentice. A rejected Jedi prospect, Jaycen Tarkin, from the planet Eriadu. A descendent from the Tarkin family, great grandson of Jova Tarkin. Bek, Cleigh, and Osahna were sent after the two.
They were traced to a remote planet, much like the one Bek was discovered on. Osahna was separated by Jaycen, who had constructed his own crimson lightsaber, while the three were in pursuit of Sabrin. Bek and Cleigh cornered Sabrin on a plateau.
In the ensuing battle, Bek fell to the dark side in order to best Sabrin. Cleigh interrupted the killing strike, afraid that allowing it to happen would push Bek to the dark side forever. Angered by Cleigh’s actions the battle shifts to a free for all; the three parrying each other: Cleigh having to defend against both but only attacking Sabrin; Sabrin and Bek attacking each other and Cleigh. In a slight of hand maneuver, Bek opens Cleigh to an attack from Sabrin and in the attack Bek strikes Sabrin as her blade plunges into Cleigh.
Cleigh lies lifeless as Sabrin collapses to her knees. In her final moments she declares Bek’s training as a Sith Apprentice complete and grants him the mantle Darth Malvex. She apologizes for leaving him behind and everything she hid from him. She warns him of “the truth of the cataclysm” but passes before she could finish.
As Sabrin dies, Osahna returns to find her former master dead and Bek mourning over Sabrin. The two begin battle as she believes Bek killed her master. He subdues her and disarms her, tells her he died from her blade and that he avenged him. She exclaims she senses the darkness inside him and he admits he feels conflicted but is not her enemy.
The pair carried the bodies back, Osahna tells Bek that Jaycen escaped on their ship and that they must take Sabrin’s ship back to the temple. During the flight, Bek removes the crystals from Cleigh and Sabrin’s sabers, ditching the devices out the airlock. Telling Osahna they must have dropped them planet-side.
At the temple, Bek and Osahna are questioned about the events. Jaycen’s escape and stealing their ship, the deaths of Sabrin and Cleigh, leaving behind their sabers and crystals, and the meaning of the cataclysm. Osahna’s involvement was minimal and was released almost immediately. Bek, on the other hand, was nearly interrogated again, much like when he first arrived. He admitted to feeling conflicted with the force during the battle and over the deaths but that his resolve to the light is greater than to the dark. After pleading he had no involvement in the death of Cleigh he too was released.
Alone in his chambers, Bek ponders over the crystals, never before has he seen the power source of a red saber. Upon inspection and destroying the red crystals, he discovers that one crystal was synthetic and the other was an ordinary crystal. But something was different, he felt pain and suffering in the crystal, that the crystal was not Sabrin’s. It had another master before. He took the crystals belonging to Cleigh in his hands and he poured his hatred of his former masters into the crystal. He poured into the crystal his sadness of the loss of his lover, the fear of him getting caught by council, and the regret of lying to everyone, and a beautiful crimson began showing. He began building his new saber, a staff design similar to Sabrin’s.
At day break, he hid his finished saber in a pack he was going to take off world for his next mission. He was greeted by the council with his own padawan a girl barely in her teens. A girl from his home world of Dantooine, who’s birth he had heard about just as he was leaving with Sabrin. The daughter of the family his family worked for, Val Morine. He learned that his own padawan meant he was being promoted to a knight. The council found his ability to slay a Sith master was a feat of someone more skilled than a padawan and that a promotion would mean they trust that he will remain on the Jedi path.
His next mission was to Dantooine, to investigate the cataclysm with his padawan. This was where he was going anyways to bury his new saber.
