In the safe, secretive space of the Redoubt, a number of shipyards were churning out vessels for the CEDF. Currently, there were two fleets and a third in construction. 72 Chiss Star Destroyers, 2 Chiss Dreadnaughts, hundreds of light cruisers, and countless gunships, Clawcraft, and Airstraekers. The fleets were all destined to protect the borders of the Ascendancy, and countless small scout fleets. These were the prides of the Chiss Navy. The Aristocras had approved their construction following the apparent crisis that had stricken the galaxy. The Chiss Ascendancy would not fall to something this small.
The Redoubt, formally the Chiss Redoubt, was a remote star cluster that was located in Chiss space, near the Utegetu Nebula, and that contained at least ten habitable planets and hundreds of stars. Discovered over 200 years prior to 22 ABY and claimed by the CEDF, the cluster was to be used as the site of a last stand, in the event that Chiss space was overrun by any foreign invader. Exploration of the Redoubt by the Chiss only began in earnest around 27 BBY. The Redoubt contained high radiation levels, and the close proximity of stars to each other made navigation difficult. There were only a few safe routes into The Redoubt, and they were all guarded by Chiss fortifications, which prevented foreign intrusions. A planetoid in The Redoubt was the resting place of the ill-fated Outbound Flight Project, which crashed there in 27 BBY.
Csilla, the homeworld of the Chiss, was a cold world of glaciers and snowy wastes located deep within Chiss Space, and served as the capital of the Chiss Ascendancy.
The Expeditionary Library was located in a remote sector on the planet Csilla, the capital of the Chiss Ascendancy in the Unknown Regions, and was some distance away from the Chiss city Ac'siel. Situated deep underneath the ice that covered Csilla, the library was in a secure installation and featured a pair of large, sturdy doors that permitted access to the facility. Taking up the size of a docking bay, the Expeditionary Library was rectangular in shape and had four levels of walkways—accessed by steep stairwells—that adorned the walls. Yellow lights hung from the ceiling of the library, supported by cables, and the main floor was partitioned by a multitude of shelves arranged in rows, with narrow aisles between them. A large square table made of snowwood was located in the center of the Expeditionary Library, and it had room enough to seat at least twenty people. The air in the library was still, warm, and dry.
The Expeditionary Library housed the mission reports, contact histories, anthropological essays, and xenobiology tracts from the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force's exploration of the Unknown Regions of the galaxy, all stored in book form, as data stored by technological means could be destroyed by ice storms; thus, the library did not have any holoscreens. Because all of the sources in the library were in written form, certain methods helped when searching for a subject, and the contents of the library were scrupulously cataloged. The majority of the text available in the library was translated into Basic, though some of it remained in Cheunh, the language of the Chiss species.
This large structure, consisting of two, large domes connected to a large system of bunkers underneath them. It was the headquarters of the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force.
Csaplar was the capital city of the planet Csilla and the Chiss Ascendancy. Csaplar was the center of the Chiss government, containing House Palace, the parliament, the headquarters for the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force, and the four ruling families. Csaplar was connected to every location of Csilla through an underground system of tubes.
The planet entered an ice age in 5,000 BBY. Glaciers covered the normally-warm equatorial regions of the planet, while solid ice locked the poles in perpetual winter. In order to survive, the Chiss built energy-efficient warrens beneath the ice, as close to the warmth of the inner planet as possible, with underground carriage travel routes to connect the various underground sections of Csilla. The iceways were bored through the bedrock of the planet, so that they were unaffected by the shifting ice found on the planet's surface.
