"Attention!" The sergeant called, the amplifiers in his helmet carrying his voice through the winding hallways. "This is Sergeant Rhyn with the Republic Garrison. If you can hear me, we received your distress call. We're here to help."
=Jedi Academy, Medical Bay Waiting Room=
Rai's scream, ridden with pain and grief, echoed off the walls, effectively drowning out any announcement that Sergean Rhyn would be able to make. The Jedi continued to rock back and forth until finally he could scream no more, his throat dry and scratched, his voice all but failing him. He sobbed, tears streaking down his cheek, leaving a trail on his dirty and bloodied skin.
Suddenly, a warm sensation penetrated his chest, it was comforting and full of compassion. Rai stopped as the presence began to envelope him like a blanket. As the warmth continued to spread, Rai noticed the presence held a familiarity in the Force.
"Kendra?" He whispered. It was as loud as he could speak after his volatile outburst.
"Someone calls for you, Rai." Her voice bounced around the walls of the waiting room. Although this wasn't the first encounter Rai had experienced with someone speaking to him from the Netherworld, this one was shocking. "Your help has arrived. You must call out."
"I can't... my voice..."
"Use your senses. Reach out. Feel." And then she was gone, as quickly as she had came, the warmth in his body dissipating into nothingness. But Rai trusted her, he trusted Kendra with his life. He closed his eyes, and expanded his mind, feeling and searching for the presence of his rescuers. And then, he felt them, a small group... and with them, another Jedi.
Rai reached out to the Jedi's mind and let his aura expand in the Force, serving as a beacon so that he could be found.
"Hold!" The sergeant made a halting gesture to the troopers, who had all shouldered their rifles the moment the scream ripped through the air. "Sounds like we've got company. Look sharp."
"I don't think that was an infected." Miras said from the rear, frowning. Something prickled along the edge of his senses, tugging at his attention. Focusing on it took everything he had- he was exhausted- but after a moment, it began to take shape, solidifying into a presence.
"Then what the kriff was it?" Loman rumbled without lowering his rifle.
"Maybe our Jedi. I think he's this way."
He started off down the hallway, the dumbfounded troopers following in his wake. The force acted as his guide, urging him to turn down intersections and through doorways without the need for Miras to think. 'Hope we don't need to find our way back out in a hurry,' the Jedi thought with a smirk. 'Cause I have no idea where I'm going.'
The battered troop rounded a corner, and there he was, huddled on the floor and clutching a corpse. Rhyn moved to approach, but Miras threw up an arm to ward him back. His gaze was fixated ahead, a stony expression on his face. "Wait," he said, then called out. "Did she bite you? Did you get her blood on you? Are you infected?"
He waited tensely for an answer, his thumb resting on the activation stud of his lightsaber. The thought of tracking down the only other Jedi on the planet only to have to put him down left a sour taste the Knight's mouth, but if it came down to it, he would keep these soldiers safe.
Rai could sense the incomers getting closer, led by the Jedi that he felt through the Force. Finally, they entered and he heard the Jedi speak. Listening to his words, the Cerean carefully placed Kendra's body on the floor so that she lay on her back, her hands resting on her stomach, her eyes eternally closed.
"I'm ok." He whispered, his throat still raw from his previous outburst. Turning to face the group, Rai bowed in a symbol of respect and greeting, "I am Knight Rai Darkwater. Thank you all for coming to my aid." Rai's body straightened back to its full height as he looked at Miras, "I must get to the Red Dawn Medical Center on Honoghr." He paused as he weighed the option of telling them more, ultimately deciding that he was in the presence of a Jedi, and that they could be trusted. Although he was wary, his senses were unable to detect any signs of deception,
Rai scanned the troopers, making eye contact with all of them, before returning back to Miras' gaze, "I know how to cure the virus."
As those in the Jedi Academy prepared to evactuate, several gunships and starfighters raced towards it. Granted, they had been bogged down in the city, giving any defenders a chance to set up before they arrived, but they were prepared for heavy resistance. The gunships carrying the snipers set down on a ridge overlooking the front of the academy. Some meagre defense had been prepared. The railgun troopers locked into the ground and began shelling the entrance. They were not, however, sure if they were hitting anything, as the railguns were effectively oversized mortars. At the same time, gunships and starfighters wildly strafed the area around the academy. Soldiers landed in the front and began to make their way towards the academy.
My squad had no sooner made it inside the Academy than the walls began to shake from tremors of what sounded like cannon fire from the outside. I looked back toward Echo, who gave me a thumbs-up, indicating we were all safe inside. I looked down the dimly lit corridor ahead, not spotting any danger I issued my squad forward. The structure had been badly damaged, rubble here and there where the roof had collapsed, or a supporting pillar had fallen, a wall or two were missing and laying on the floor. As we progressed I heard movement down a corridor to the right, throwing up my fist for a halt I gave a few silent commands and my squad moved to cover the entrance to the corridor in question and the hallway we had just come.
A few minutes passed and the noises slowly got louder as the person or persons walked our way. I finally decided it was time to announce our presence and decide if they were friend or foe. “Identify yourself! You are cut off from your exit by Republic troops, any attempt to flee or fight will be met with deadly force. Jedi Rai, is that you?” I could only hope that it was the Jedi and not some of these Enclave soldiers that might have beaten us to him. Plus, my squad hadn’t gotten a rest since saving all those civilians, and were in no condition to fight fully armored soldiers. “Please be Jedi Rai, please be Jedi Rai.” I mumbled to myself looking down the sights of my A-280 blaster rifle waiting for the first sign of hostility.
"He could be lying," Loman sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose with his forefinger and thumb. "Trying to get a military escort off-world."
The sapper stood between Miras and Rhyn, just outside the door to the medical bay. Within, two more troopers kept watch over the Jedi, though whether for his protection or theirs, no one had said.
"He's not lying. I'd have sensed it if he was."
Rhyn scoffed. "Give me a break. I know forcefuls can hide their motives from each other. That's how we ended up with the damn Empire. He could be playing you, too."
"Not me." The knight shook his head. "I'm an Empath, sergeant. Probably the most powerful one still alive today. He's not lying."
"Fine, say he really does have the cure. That still doesn't release us from our orders. We can't abandon the senator."
Miras bit his lip, but said nothing. Technically, he was under no obligation, to the senator or to the Republic military. In all truth, his number one priority absolutely should be getting Rai offworld, and the mission be damned. But he had made his choice when he'd been prepared to kill the Jedi in defense of the soldiers. There was no backing out now, and deep down, the knight knew he could never abandon these people.
"...the comm booster." Loman was saying. "We need to try to get a message to the estate. If it's been overrun, then we can start looking at our options."
'And if not, attempting a rescue will be a suicide mission.' Miras finished for him, but didn't say. It didn't matter either way. His path had been set.
Inside the medical bay, one of the troopers removed her helmet, revealing a shock of white hair and wide silver eyes. Kneeling, she placed it on the floor, and then gestured. "She was close to you, wasn't she? Can I help you get her up on the bed?"
And then the steady thwump, thump, thump of cannon-fire shook the academy's foundations. Miras could feel them, circling, advancing, hunting. Hatred and malice boiling from numerous life forms. Not the mindless rage of the infected, no. This was cold, calculated cruelty, and it was getting closer.
"We need to move. Now."
"Looks like those Imperials got the Jedi's message, too." Rhyn agreed, slapping open the door to the medical bay. "Alright, Jedi, let's go: take us to the facility's comm station, now."
"Yes, she was a dear friend of mine." Rai responded to the trooper that offered to help place Kendra's body on the bed. Together, they lifted Kendra's dead weight and carried her over to the bed. Setting her down gently, Rai nodded his head to the trooper, "Thank you." Then, he took a moment to take the bed sheet and cover her body. Then, he activated the repulsers on the bed. He wasn't leaving her here. Kendra deserved a proper funeral.
Suddenly, the academy shook under the force of canon-fire coming from outside. Rai's sensed the evil that was approaching, and he could tell that the other Jedi Knight sensed it too.
"Yes, the communication center isn't far from here. Let's go." As he spoke, he gripped Kendra's bed and pushed it ahead of him as started to lead the way down the hallway. He could sense the newcomers' fatigue and exhaustion, they were dragging. The outside world was harsh and violent, and if you made one false step, it would cost you your life.
"You all are tired, let me help with that." Rai reached out with the Force, and let it expanded around him like a bubble until all of the troopers and the Jedi were within its radius. They would feel a warm, energizing sensation as Rai utilized a technique that he frequently used as a healer for the Jedi Order: Force Revitalize. "Whatever is going on outside, we all need to be at our best."
Suddenly, a commanding voice filtered down the hallway announcing more republic soldiers were barricading the entrance to Academy and that they were also responding to Rai's transmission. The Cerean Jedi didn't stop his pace, knowing he had to get this fellow Jedi and his troopers to the communications center, but he did call out, forcing his voice despite the pain from his recent scream. "Yes, it is Rai. I'm escorting allies to the communications center! We need any time you can give us before we can leave!"
“Time.” I repeated to myself, “What could you possibly need at the Communications Center?” I lowered my rifle and turned to my squad, “Alright men, I know today has been a long day, but we need to set up a choke point at the main entrance to this building. We don’t have enough time to build any barricades or dig any trenches that may slow down the Enclave, but if we can get them to file through those doors two or three at a time, it won’t matter if they have numbers or superior fire power. We need to give the Jedi and his new friends enough time to get what they need so we can exfil with Fritz and get everyone off planet.”
“What’s the plan Dogma?” Echo asked with stubbornness flashing in his eyes, something I always liked about him, “We are only ten soldiers, and the Enclave has a currently unknown number of soldiers. We are behind you nonetheless.”
“We need to set up a path for a steady retreat to the Communications Center. This building looks like a generic Academy, the Communications Center should be a few corridors down this hallway. That is where we are going to have to make our last stand if we can’t hold them here.” As I spoke I pointed down the hall then back to the door to emphasize my points, “We will line up along the walls, behind these pillars and wait for the Enclave to march through the front door, when the first two have entered we will use our thermal detonators to blow them away. Then-”
“Uhm, sir? We, we don’t have thermal detonators. We were told it would be a low casualty, rescue mission, and were told to pack seismic and concussion grenades.” Interrupted one of the Privates as I continued to lay out my plan.
“Alright, then we will use concussion grenades to attempt to disorient the first few waves of soldiers that enter the doorway. If we are lucky we will be able to pile them high enough that they will be hard set to climb over and left vulnerable to our blasters.” I continued my planning out loud. “Get set up, and ready for the attack. If they hail us for parley, I will talk to them, when they attack use your grenades sparingly.”
My squad moved as quickly as they could, tired as they were in the confined space. I hoped the Enclave would forgo their assault on the Academy and move on. But as that was unlikely I readied myself for the imminent attack. "This is gonna be fun." Score mumbled sarcastically as he crouched behind a pillar next to me, "How do we always get those assignments that always go south?"he asked looking over at me.
I understood what he meant; ‘Raven Squad’ was what the four of us had become known as. It was commonly known that the raven was a symbol for bad luck, and it was believed that death follow us wherever we went. The last full squadron before this one we had been attached to had been wiped out by Stormtroopers on Yavin IV before we had been able to get backup form the Republic, and the squad we had been attached to this time had died to the Ragers. Nobody had to know our squad’s name, and hopefully our luck would change this time.
The Enclave soldiers made their way towards the academy, reaching the main courtyard in a few minutes. It was heavily damaged due to the shelling, but few of the shells had actually hit the Jedi Academy. These were low penetration, high radius shells, and had mostly rattled the building rather than actually damage it. The courtyard, however, had been nearly completely obliterated. The soldiers had assembled in the courtyard and were ready to assault the temple itself. They would not, however, immediately charge the entrance. Instead a number of soldiers began throwing thermal imploders and sonic grenades into the entrance area of the temple, before they advanced, for the simple reason that they did not want to have to pass through the small space. Within minutes, they had increased the size of the entrance to allow 4 of the power armor equipped soldiers to enter at once. They were resistant to most forms of damage, save for ion grenades, and provided near invulnerability from concussion grenades. The first wave, consisting of 8 solders, prepared to storm the entrance. Wielding flamethrowers and rotary cannons, these were the heavy infantry of the group. The commander held his hand up for three seconds, before dropping it. Immediately, the soldiers charged through the hole they had created, spraying laser fire and flames in a fan of death around them...
More explosions, more destruction, once the dust cleared the entrance to the Academy had doubled in size. “That, that’s not good.” I said to Score who was readying his blaster for the oncoming enemy.
“Uhm, Dogma. They have flamethrowers, and looks like rotary cannons.” Called back Echo, “We are going to get burned to a crisp if we don’t do something here!”
I looked at Echo, then my squad, then the orange blaze and blaster fire that had enveloped the entrance to the Academy. The first couple members of my squad were twenty meters from the entrance, keeping them clear of the fires, but that wouldn’t be for long if they stayed there. I surveyed the surrounding area of the main corridor, thermals could have easily destroyed the ceiling and block the entrance for a while. The concussion grenades would have no effect on the ceiling, but enough seismic damage might do the trick.
“Everyone! Fall back to a safe location! Throw your concussion grenades at the fire as a distraction, their armor will protect against it, but it could disorient them a little. When you are at a safe distance set all your seismic charges to four seconds and make sure they are adhesively set. Then prime them and throw them all on the ceiling. The combined damage should bring it down and buy us some time! Hurry!” I commanded, hoping my plan to collapse the hallway worked.
One of the Privates, who hadn’t quite made it back to the group took a blaster round to the back and dropped his charge after prematurely setting it. six seconds later his body was flung toward the wall of flames that made its way to us, foot by foot. As my men all began throwing their charges at the ceiling two more of them took blaster fire to their chests, killing them immediately.
“One… Two… Three…” I counted to myself before, BOOM! The charges all exploded simultaneously, rocking the hallway. A couple men lost their footing to the vibrations and shockwave. Then, the ceiling began to collapse ten feet from my group, dust and debris showered on us as we sought shelter from the falling stones that were once the ceiling. After a long minute the sound of falling rocks and blaster fire was silenced and the tremors had stopped. “We need to fall back and leave this place, I am not going to lose anymore of you to this Enclave. They are too powerful and we won't be able to do anything to that armor. We are getting the Jedi, whoever he is with and we are leaving.” I said after clearing my throat.
We all gathered ourselves, our gear, and made our way toward the Communications Center at a brisk march. Before long we made it to the room in question. I walked into the room, followed by my men and disregarded anything anyone was currently saying or doing, “We have to leave. NOW! The Enclave, as there are called are at our locked front door, and they don’t want prisoners. We have blocked the hallway as best we could and slowed them down some, but they will get through soon enough.” Anger was building within me as I spoke, “I am out gunned, out manned, and losing men faster than vultures eat the dead. We came here to help Jedi Rai get off planet, but I will not keep sacrificing MY men to do so. And that means WE LEAVE NOW!” I emphasized my point by slamming my fist on a nearby desk and awaited anyone’s reply, mainly the Jedi, whom I was glaring at. He was the reason I had lost those three men in the hallway, because HE wanted more TIME.
Corellia's garrison made no reply to the other group of soldiers as they volunteered to hold the entrance, and headed off. It didn't need said aloud: each of them knew it a was a suicide mission. The Imperial that had arrived on world easily outnumbered them several times over. They were heavily armed and armored, and had access to an obviously advanced level of technology, not to mention a clear line of communications and air support.
Running was their only chance, and as Dogma's squad left to give them time to do just that, none of them even offered a thanks. 'It's their duty, after all,' Miras thought to himself as he fell in line with the groiup heading for the communication center. Loman took point, marching a few paces ahead of the them with his light repeater shouldered. Infected had obviously compromised the Academy; there was no telling where they might encounter the feral creatures.
The empath quietly moved to walk beside Rai. "Have you been able to contact any other members of the Order? I've sent out messages, but..." He left his concerns unsaid, but they would be obvious enough. Was it possible the Order had been destroyed? Surely the rest of the galaxy hadn't fared as bad as Corellia- the garrison here was small, as was the Academy. They hadn't had the manpower to respond effectively when the infection had begun to spread, but other worlds- Coruscant, Honoghr- had to have survived.
The sound of explosions suddenly rang out again, closer this time, and a different timber. The roof above their heads creaked, and Miras felt crushed duracrete raining down on his shoulders.
"They must've breached the entrance." The sergeant's voice rang out, tense and strained. "Double time, people."
They all knew what he wasn't saying: if the Imperials had made it inside, it would only take them seconds to slaughter the Republic soldiers that had volunteered to defend the entrance. It only took them a few more minutes to make it to the comm station, a modest office just off the main hallway leading from the medical bay. Loman, the sapper, ducked inside, along with Rhyn. The rest of the squad huddled just outside the doorway.
"We've got a link to the estate!" Miras heard Loman shout from inside.
"Attention, this is Sergeant Rhyn, with the Republic garrison of Corellia. We have orders to evacuate the Senator and his staff to a safe location offworld. Do you read me?"
And then, running footsteps. Miras turned to see the squad from earlier approaching. Their leader stormed past, his face dark with anger, and, heaving a sigh, the knight followed him into the office. Normally this would be the sergeant's mess to deal with, but he was a little occupied at the moment.
"We're not leaving without the Senator," Miras replied softly, standing close enough to the soldier to make it obvious it wasn't debatable. "And neither are you. You abandoned your post at the entrance at first contact with the enemy?" He snorted humorlessly, gray eyes flashing with a burgeoning anger of their own. "Some Republic troopers you turned out to be."
At first, the begin of their small journey to the Communications Center was quiet, except for the explosions that echoed throughout the academy as the newly arrived Republic troops tried to hold off whatever evil that was approaching at bay. But finally, the empath, whose name still alluded the Cerean Jedi, came to walk next to him. He could sense the fellow Jedi's worry, and knew what was bothering him before he even spoke.
"Unfortunately you are the only one that I have made contact with," He kept his voice even, forcing himself to forget the emotions that were welling up inside of him. Now wasn't the time for grieving or for worry. He needed to treat this like any other mission. "However, I have recently found out that there was a summit for all surviving Jedi to meet on Naboo. But that was days ago." He raised his hand to gently pat his fellow Jedi's shoulder, "Have faith in the Force."
Was he really telling the empath that? Or was he telling himself?
They finally reached the communications center, taking hardly any time after the commanded double-time, and a trooper and the sergeant entered, leaving Rai and the others outside to wait. "I'm afraid I haven't caught your name, Knight er....?"
But before Miras could answer, Rai's ears picked up Sergeant Rheyn's voice speaking into the comms channel, that meant that a link was established. Hopefully they'd get a response soon. The Cerean knew everyone felt it... the sense of impending doom. Time was wearing thin.
He released his use of the Force, allowing the restorative energy that surrounded the troopers to dissipate into the eternal pool that was Ashla. They would be rejuvenated by now, having been able to bask in it since their encounter in the med-bay. Then, the Cerean's eyes caught sight of more troopers at the end of the hallway. The commanding officer, which if Rai's memory of military insignia was correct, was a corporal, approached him and Miras, anger dripping off of him as if he had just come out of a swimming pool. He was furious, and threw demands about leaving now, but the fellow Jedi stepped in to argue. Feeling the tension rising, Rai stepped between the two, turning his head to look at Miras and then to Dogma as he spoke.
"Gentlemen please, the only way we can survive this is by uniting together. Any actions that divide us further will only create failure to get the cure to Honoghr and the rescue of the senator." He looked at Dogma, "Corporal, I'm sorry about your men and for your loss, but they did their duty. You need to keep doing yours. We will have time to mourn the dead after we are off-world." Rai's eyes shot to the bed that carried Kendra's body, covered by the sheet. His heart lurched, but he swallowed his pain....
He brought his gaze to Miras, "If they're swarming the entrance, we'd be dead if we faced them head on. But, there might be another way." The hangar bay....
"I don't know what kind of evacuation either of you two had planned, but if we can all rendezvous at the Hangar Bay, we might have a shot. The connecting hallway is collapsed and I was unsuccessful at clearing it myself." His gaze flickered back to Miras, a small sliver of hope re-emerging in his heart, "But with two of us, I think we can manage it."
The way the grey eyed Jedi mocked my troops lit the burning embers of my anger into an undirected rage, “YOU DARE MOCK MY TROOPS!?!” I yelled as I shoved my index finger into his face, “We successfully blocked the front entrance of this building. I don’t see you volunteer your services to help against these heavily armored and armed soldiers. They say a Jedi is worth a HUNDRED soldiers, I HAD TEN!” I removed my hand and pointed at Rai as I continued my outburst, “He needed to send a message, not you. You could have helped hold back the Enclave soldiers.” I didn’t even hear Rai’s quiet voice request for unity or calm heads through the sound of blood rushing through my veins. I glared at the Jedi in front of me, wishing I could wipe the mocking look off his face.
After letting my nostrils flare with heavy breathing, I heard Rai speak to my anger’s target. “The main entrance to this building is closed, it will take them a little while to remove the rubble or find another way in.” I replied to his mention of the entrance in a quieter tone, still glaring at the grey eyed Jedi. “And I have my LAAT drop ship on standby for this evac. Not that any of you knew that. ‘Just let the soldiers throw their lives away’, for the betterment of the greater good I guess.” I tapped my communicator on my wrist, “Fritz, make your way to the Hanger bay for an exfil. You copy?”
::Copy that Dogma. ETA to the Hanger bay will be fifteen mics. Gotta dodge some fighters to make my way down::
I looked at Rai my anger having subsided tremendously for some reason, “We have our evacuation set up. Have you sent your message yet?”
To the soldiers in the room, Dogma's anger would be almost like a palpable thing. To Rai, it was no doubt something akin to a concussive flare. To Miras, feet away and with force energy humming through his entire body thanks to the Cerean Jedi's efforts, it was like a raging inferno, to the point he could feel its heat on his face. Desperation, the empath decided, not without sympathy. Coupled with a feeling of impotence. Understandable, if misplaced.
"The greater good." the Jedi echoed, after Rai and Dogma had both had a chance to say their piece, and then shook his head. "If you weren't up for the job, you shouldn't have volunteered for it. Your men died because of your call, not mine. Get the kriff out of my face." He pushed past the soldier and stepped out into the hall, his burnt cloak rustling as he fumbled a cigarra from one of the inner pockets and lit it. Watching the direction the Imperial's would be coming from and smoking, the knight tapped one finger against the hilt of his lightsaber, and waited.
In the silence that followed, Rhyn threw down the headset in disgust. "No response. Either the bastards overran their defenses, or their comm array is down, just like CorSec's." The sergeant stood and turned to face Rai and Dogma. "We've been on this planet for too long. Lost too many men. Knight Tinup has done more than his share of fighting, soldier, and we're on the same side." He paused long enough to be sure his message got across, then finally sighed in resignation. "And of the same mind as well, it seems. Retreat and evacuation are our only options. Knight Rai, if you lead the way, we'll escort you to the hangar and offworld. We can take you as far as Honoghr- after that, we have to proceed to the rally point on Carida.
I'm not the praying sort, but I hope to Ashla this cure of yours really works. The entire galaxy is counting on it."
Outside, Miras dropped the butt of his cigarra and crushed it under his heel. His voice was soft as the emerald blade of his lightsaber hissed to life. "They're coming."
The explosion barely harmed the power armor wearing Enclave soldiers, who's armor stood up to the falling debris relatively well. What was a problem was the path was now hindered. In a rage, the commander began shouting orders. "Artillery! I want you to begin shelling the building. No more messing around. High explosive shells. It will at the very least tear apart the upper floors and kill some Jedi Scum. Troopers, use sonic grenades to clear the rubble! NOW!!!" The orders were nearly immedeately carried out. Soldiers used sonic grenades to loosen the rubble and break it into smaller chunks, which could be strode through by the soldiers. At the same time, the high explosive shells began raining down onto the academy. While not actively harming Rai and his allies, it would seriously shake up the building, and would, at the very least, serve as a viable psychological weapon. The rubble clearing took about 7 minutes, following which the hulking soldiers stormed into the Academy in force. The corridors narrowed from here, so flametroopers led the way, ready to incinerate anything in their path. As they began their sweep of the building, the commandant looked straight ahead into the academy at one of the symbols on the wall. That of the Jedi Order. Using an explosive, he vaporized the emblem. The Jedi were filth who brought disorder to the galaxy, and protected those who needed purging. He then joined one of the squads rushing into the corridors as the soldiers began to hunt the Jedi Rai room by room.
