“Aalana Branton?” called out Lieutenant Parlo while reading a list on a data pad.
“Present!” came a prompt reply from the line of cadets.
“Kayden Crale”
“Present!”
“Tess Darkstrider?” continued the Lieutenant scrolling down the list on the data pad.
No reply.
“Tess Darkstrider??” repeated the lieutenant a little louder.
Again, no reply.
“Tess Darkstri-” said the Lieutenant again, looking up from the data pad to see Tess fall in line, “Late again, Cadet Darkstrider. That’s your second time this week.”
“Yes sir, won’t happen again sir!” replied Tess standing at attention. It wasn’t her fault she was late, someone had hidden all of her boots in the air ducts above the barracks. She had a fairly good idea that it was the only Chiss of her class, but right now she just had to stay out of trouble, which he had caused her much of.
“Tsark” the Lieutenant finished the list.
“Present.” Replied the smooth voice of the Chiss who looked down the line at Tess, a scowl on his face. She wasn’t sure why he had it out for her, it may have been because they were both competing for top of the class, or it may be because the class believed she had been handed her entry into the Academy where everyone else had to compete to get in. Which wasn’t exactly true, after she had single handedly disabled most of his squad who were drafting eligible people into the Republican Army on their village on Lothal after the Rage passed through the galaxy she had been given a choice by a Republican officer: go to prison or join the Republic as a cadet. Albeit a forcible recruitment, but she wouldn’t let that stop her from bettering herself to defeat those who would harm her.
“Today cadets, we will be continuing your training in close quarters combatives.” Stated Parlo, “You will be grouped into pairs, based on your skills over the last year and a half. Cadets, to the training grounds.” All fourteen cadets promptly left faced and marched to the training grounds where they were put into groups of two. Tess and Tssark ended up being placed together, much to her prediction and apprehension.
Tess stood at a five foot five, her toned body only weighing in at one hundred twenty pounds. She had excelled at the unarmed combat, far above any of the other cadets of her class. Her opponent Tssark wasn’t as skilled, but he didn’t need perfect moves or skill to beat his opponent when sparring. Standing at six-foot-one, Tsark weighed in at two hundred pounds. He was known for analyzing his opponent’s every movement and strike until the last minute where he would ultimately and utterly destroy his opponent. A few of the cadets had been placed in the infirmary because of him.
"Your goal for today is to subdue your opponent without any weapons." instructed Lt. Parlo, "You will have five minutes to do so, you may begin, now." With what she knew of Tsark, she had to play her cards just right to win this fight. Tsark threw a couple jabs and a kick, testing Tess’s reaction speed. She easily dodged each shot and threw her own combination at him. He blocked her with less ease, but each strike and kick she sent his way he studied, analyzed. But what he didn’t seem to realize was that Tess was studying him during their duel as well. “Analysis: slow on his feet, strong in his strikes, quick in his blocks, conclusion: sweep his legs, gain control of his arm, place him in an armbar. Fight concluded.” Thought Tess, right before starting that sequence of events. Tess swept her foot to take out Tsark’s legs, who attempted but failed to jump and fell on his back. Tsark did not stay still as Tess had predicted, he attempted to roll away from her but not before she stomped on his wrist, pinning him in place. He grabbed her ankle and pulled both it and his wrist at the same time throwing her off balance and rolled away from her.
Tess fell to one knee as Tsark clambered to his feet and delivered a quick kick to Tess’s jaw, sending her reeling. The arena tumbled around Tess as she rolled a couple of feet where she stopped, dazed. She rolled to her hands and knees where a kick was delivered to her side, expelling all the air from her lungs and she collapsed gasping for air. “You’re beaten, give up and stay down Darkstrider.” Gloated Tsark as stood over her. Tess wasn’t done yet, she still had fight in her. She rolled into Tsark’s legs steamrolling them and causing him to fall flat on his back. She continued her steamroll until she had cleared his head then rolled to her hands and knees, she quickly she stood up and prepared again to face her opponent, coughing for breath.
Tsark rolled over and slowly stood up, “You will regret letting me stand up.” He said with a growl. “*Cough* What’re you talking about? This fight is just beginning.” Replied Tess in a mocking tone before sending a couple jabs and a right hook his way. Tsark blocked each attack and continued analyzing her movements. “Always analyzing and studying, aren’t you?” thought Tess, trying to be predictable as she continued her assault. -Right jab- -Left swing- -Right fake- -Right mid kick- -Left hook- -Left mid kick- -Repeat-. Before long Tsark was prepositioning his blocks before Tess placed her strike and that was when she knew she had won. Tess started her sequence again, but this time when Tsark planted his back foot and prepared to receive her right kick, she changed at the last second delivered a low left kick taking his forward foot out from under him causing him to overextend his leg. Tess followed her momentum and rolled into a rightt elbow strike to Tsark’s head knocking him unconscious.
Tess stood there for a second, breathing heavily over the crumpled mass of Tsark. A couple arena guards ran to up to her and instructed her to follow them immediately. “What did I do wrong?” she insisted as they marched her off the arena grounds. As the doors shut behind her Tess saw Tsark sit up with the aid of the field medics assigned to the arena.
