“Thank you” I returned the parcel to within my cloak and began to filter out information from the latest dispatch of the AAI
“Believe it or not, part of this is proper research for maintaining character. For as long as I can, at least. Though given the looks I got from Master Matango… I have probably already been found out…”
I opened up the cube that contained the crystal database and popped out every crystal… coding for a moment I then went to my com and coded them to appear as their lattice structure.
“The other part… is that I believe that one of these structures would be best served to capture the virus… pre zero patient allowing scientists to sequence the virus’ Genome… at which point we would need someone to imbue the antivirus through alchemy, though whether it needs to be ashla or bo… wait do you see this?” I stood by the structure of the sapphire crystal when I realized it. Rotating the structure 125 degrees made a parallel elemental junction appear between the Kyber and the sapphire.
“The Kyber crystal is a… Rosetta crystal of all others. When a kyber crystal vein was added to every planet, some worlds didn’t have the necessary makeup to produce the cyber crystal as designed, so they broke it down and rebuilt it into something that could be supported.”
This was like a kid on Christmas. Figuring this out went a long way toward his goal. Stepping outside of the chamber he ran another sequence of containment tests before he sat against a wall, weary from the excitement and the pain
“I know you think this endeavor is hopeless… but we may have just been given the single most important key to finding a cure….” Shortly after that I dozed off. While I slept the AAI returned once again
:: Good Ne…oh, he is asleep. Sir… could you do me a favor? When the young man awakens… can you inform him that I have found a number of worlds most likely to have a vein of pre zero crystals?::
Loki strode forward and prodded the young man in the back, he had been leaning against the edge of the echo chamber but at the AI's inference decided it best to wake him now instead. "Faster this way." He said simply to the AI. "Sorry but it has good news apparently." Loki finished and retreated to his spot outside of the echo chamber, it reminded him all to well of a psychotic array he once found himself in. He shook his head and paid attention to what was happening.
Kirwin walked toward the entry of the lab after the clone and Jedi left the room. The lightsabers weighed down his belt unnecessarily and nobody else needed one so the logical thing would be to return them to the ship and maybe grab his rifle. Having walked the route a few times now Kirwin easily made his way to the Hangar bay where he saw the Jedi and clone trooper conversing with a Wookie.
Despite the crushing desire to return the favor for waking my up, I was awoken as my head hit the floor and bounced up in anime fashion. Standing at exaggerated attention, I received the news
::sirs, I have narrowed down the listings to four potential worlds barab I, M'haeli, Ruusan, and dantooine.::
I looked to Loki and contemplated my options. When it was clear this seemed to be the best course of action... I immediately regretted leaving my sabers in the conference room.
“Thanks Codex. Save all progress to drive and prepare for ejection. Loki, are you ready for a field trip?”
When the echo chamber went dark, I pulled the thumb drive out and returned the chip to its home in the comm
“Before we go, I will need you to lift one of those sabers from Kirwin. I don’t think they will be the key, but we can’t be certain unless we test a sample to be sure. I ... left my saber back in the conference chamber. Do you think you can do that and be in the hangar in fifteen minutes?”
I didn’t much leave him room to argue as I dashed out shortly after I finished talking. Family trait... one tracked mind.
Loki merely nodded as the young man dashed out. Loki held up his wrist link and typed a few commands, in an instant the security system had Kirwin's location brought up on his cybernetic eye's hud. Loki soon followed him out of the room and down the other way towards the turbo lifts. In an instant Loki was whisking away to another level of the facility, while the lift transported him his mind wandered to that far off world that had once lead to so much of his strife, his brothers world, a world he continuously shattered over and over. Destroying the serene peace his brother tried to build there, and when they retreated to Endor, Loki had followed there too. But Dantooine held so many bitter memories, and secrets of his.
The caverns held his secret laboratories, experimental weapons and seven identical TIE fighters. He figured the boy would choose there, merely because Loki had mentioned it in the lab. So he was returning to that world once more. Luckily he could pick up some thing he's wanted back for awhile now. The lift finally finished it's trip and deposited him on the proper floor. He saw the man just leaving the lab and luckily heading this way. "Kirwin, was it? I need one of those sabers, me and that boy are going to use it in one of the caverns, if you don't mind, please." Loki added at the end though the word sounded foreign to his ears.
Kirwin stopped short of the Hangar bay entryway when he heard his name. He didn’t remember telling anyone his name, but Force users had their ways of finding information. He turned slightly to see the hulking Zabrak striding toward him as he spoke. “Did a Sith just say ‘please’?” he thought to himself. Kirwin studied the man from head to toe contemplating his request. He was a little confused, the Sith had a lightsaber, the entire lab had seen that. Was it for the boy? Was the boy even a Force user? The lightsabers he bore were of fallen Jedi, using them against the Light would be dishonoring to their memories. Kirwin did not fully trust the Zabrak, as he was, or portrayed himself as a Sith. Whether the other Jedi trusted him or not. But in this instance, he was willing to trust the man with his given explanation.
“I will loan you a lightsaber, but I will request that you return it when you no longer require it’s services.” Kirwin said as he reached beneath his cloak and drew out a random lightsaber hilt. He ignited and extinguished the green blade to make sure it was in good working condition before looking back at the man in front of him. His violet eye glowed from underneath his hood as he attempted to discern if the answer to his next question was a lie or not, “What do you need it for and where are you going with it?” Kirwin asked as he held out the curved hilt to the Zabrak.
Loki could sense the mans distrust of him, even though he hid his face. "Something about stopping the Virus, the boy knows more. I know I was once a Sith, but fear not...I.." Loki paused. "I have not yet discussed it with anyone, however.." Loki paused again and looked down. "I plan to reestablish the Je'daii, a place for darkness and light to do good in the galaxy together, I worship bogan, but that does not make me evil, it is merely different." Loki finished quietly, walking closer and taking the held out lightsaber. "This boy may be able to fashion a protection or cure or something using the infected crystal in that saber, and we are going to a world I know well..." Loki looked into the hanger as a ship was fired up. "Dantooine, my brother once ran an Enclave there, and I'll make sure this gets back to you.." Loki finished.
Kirwin continued to hold the curved hilt out in his outstretched hand, satisfied with the Zabrak's answer. The readings from his cybernetic eye HUD indicated there were no raised heartbeats. Which meant there were no lies in what he said, or he was exceptional at lying. Either way, Kirwin belived him. "This Je'daii order you speak of, where Light and Dark are unified. I would like to know more about it. In fact, I will accompany you and the boy on your trip to Dantooine so you can tell me more on this subject." He said as he placed the hilt in the Zabrak's hand. He gestured toward the hangar bay with his other hand to indicate the man take the lead to his ship. Kirwin hoped he would not be turned down as things had started to get incredibly dull here at the RDMC since he had attempted to aid in the cure as best he could and now all he was doing was standing or sitting around. He would need to drop off his extra load of sabers at the Silent Angel and grab his rifle. Since his ship was the second closest to the facility entrance there would be no waste of time for him to stop there before getting to the starship that was currently starting its engines. "If you allow me to accompany you I will need to make a quick stop at my ship to grab my rifle and drop of my extra sabers. Which will take to time at all. Master... Uhm... I don't believe I know your name." Kirwin said as he turned to walk toward the hangar.
Loki nodded. "Absolutely, I would be happy to." Loki said about explaining about his order to the man. "I see no reason why another set of hands could hurt on this trip." Loki stated quietly Loki took the saber and began to move into the hanger. "It shouldn't take us long, if the virus did its job, the organic defenses I placed in the caverns are either enraged and ravenous, or dead." Loki said ominously as he moved into the hanger, as he moved he realized Kirwin didn't know his name. "Loki...Just Loki" He said over his shoulder as he ran towards the waiting ship with its engines heating up.
There certainly was something that the Jedi Master could be thankful for in his time of solitude since many of the others had already departed. What it allowed for, was a time of meditation. A time to reflect and reach out through the Force. To possibly be granted a premonition or even a glimpse into the past to what engineered this super virus that had devastated so much of the inhabited galaxy of the present era. However, it seemed the Force was not willing to divulge such secrets to him now.
He opened his eyes now, the green-blue orbs flashing around the vacant room he currently occupied and took in a deep breath. The stench of old, cold pizza still lingered in the room and seemed to cling to his nostrils. It was only a moment more before he closed his eyes once more and reached out to the Force again, this time feeling for the others within the RDMC.
It seemed now that everyone - well most everyone - had moved to the hangar, and there even seemed to be another few visitors. These beings also of Bogan, just as the odd partner of Adi's. Had he perhaps made more of these strange acquaintances? I mean, it wouldn't be surprising. Adi did have a particular way with people, after all, and a curious selection of friends.
Among those in the Hangar, he found Kirwin's all too familiar aura again, and it comforted him to know the former Jedi was still in good health. But his thoughts remained there for only a fleeting moment before he returned his senses to the four unknown Dark side figures within the hangar. They auras were strange and he could not pin point any intentions, but his gut churned with a foreboding manner to it. Their presence here could not be unplanned.
In his many years, Geir had learned much, but one thing that was always true when it came to the allure of Dark siders was that they were never anywhere without a purpose. Without some kind of ulterior motive. So kind of scheme. He only hoped that in this instance he was wrong. There had already been too much death and misery throughout the galaxy of late and there need be no more.
Some time passed now and Geir had now begun to slip away into a bit of a slumber only to be ripped from it as blasts rained down on the facility seemingly out of no where. Tremors shook the entire facility, shaking frames from the walls and sending them crashing to the pristine white floors below. 'What the hell?' The blasts didn't stop and it was all too evident some kind of attack was now under way and his feelings, as grave as they had been, were proving to be true yet again.
Geir's mind flashed through a dozen different scenarios as he calculated the best course of action. Then he reached out with the Force once more, determining the fate of those from the hangar and from what he could tell all were still there and unscathed, though fighting within had now begun.
This was not something any of them needed right now. This was a medical facility filled with wounded and sickly. Innocent people that did not deserve such harm sent out against them. Action needed to be taken and these people needed to be brought toward safety. This was his task now and even though he might consider himself more than capable, an extra hand would be greatly appreciated.
Swiftly, Geir rushed to a panel to accessed to the comm network and opened a channel and began to speak.
::All personnel . . . :: What the hell? Nothing. reopened and tried again, but nothing. Damn, comm was out. The attackers had been swift to jamming all comm and there was nothing he could do to get such a call out so instead he shifted back into the comfort of the Force to reach out to Kirwin.
<<Allow the others to take care of the those in the hangar, we need to prep the injured and sickly for evac here. Will you help me?>>
Kirwin made his way quickly back to the Main Lab as he had been back and forth so many times since he first arrived. The automated doors opened upon his approach and he entered the Lab to see the scientists frantically gathering test equipment and test samples as the lights flickered from the transfer from primary to backup power sources. The food had ordered when they first arrived still sat on the table, cold. Kirwin sat his rifle down by the door and walked over to Geir who was leaning on what looked like a communications control panel, “I’m here. You wouldn’t believe what is going on in the hangar right now!”
“So, some Sith showed up in the hangar saying they needed cybernetics or something like that.” He threw up his hands in a sarcastic manner, “And they were all like ’Oh we are on neutral territory, we won’t attack you.’ And even though Adi seemed to trust them I knew something was up, as did a few of the others, especially those clone troopers. And sure enough, right before the building started shaking they whipped out their lightsabers and started attacking everyone.” Kirwin finished putting his arms back down to his sides. Why was he so talkative all of a suddenly? He was usually the silent brooding type, maybe it was the adrenaline he had caught from his short time in the hanger during the fight. “Sorry, what do you need me to do?” he said dipping his chin for a second remembering he was in the presence of a Jedi master whose padawan he had killed. And he was an exiled Jedi Knight.
So it had come to this? The Sith invading and striking out as the rest of the galaxy tried to bring itself back to its feet? In all honesty that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone with the slightest knowledge of the cowards known as the Sith. Instead of proving their so called strength by taking on an enemy with a proper means, they'd chosen to strike at them while they didn't even have their feet under them yet. Smart move as why strike when that which you have decreed to be your enemy is on level footing when you can crush them like a pest beneath the heel. Very smart play by the lucrative Sith, but in no way did it prove anything in regards to their strength. And just as Sidious had fallen after dismantling the Republic from within and turning them on the Jedi, these new disciples to the corrupting ways of the Dark would fall too, for the Force was with them and sought on to be in balance once again.
It was then that the former Jedi, Kirwin, reentered the main lab as scientists and doctors scurried about. And then, to Geir's complete and utter surprise, went about rambling of the ongoing events of the hangar and how the Sith had, of all things - you guessed it - lied. It was unusual to hear the young man speak this much. And in many ways, Geir, himself, was very similar. He was also a man of few words as he preferred to allow his actions to speak for him. Perhaps this is a reason he cared for this young former Jedi Knight, and fought for him to remain in the Order when the others wanted him exiled. In Kirwin, Geir saw a lot of his younger self and he could not fault the man for following similar steps to those he had taken.
Nevertheless, there would be time to dwell on this later. Honoghr and the RDMC were under attack from a dark force that would stoop so low as to attack the defenseless in a hospital. The sickly and the hurt couldn't fight for themselves here - that responsibility fell to them now and they needed to get those that still remained, prepped for and expedient evacuation.
Geir turned and acknowledged Kirwin, and then spoke himself. His tone was serious and he spoke with haste. "There are many lessons we can learn from what has happened today, but we must hurry if we want to save as many of the sick and wounded as we can." With that, Geir waved for Kirwin to follow him as he exited the lab and headed in the direction of the patient rooms.
Just then, a large, concussive force pounded against the facility and shook the wing to its core forcing Geir to brace himself for the moment against the wall as debris and dust began to waft into the air around them. 'Should we make it through today, there is much that must be done. Meditation will be key to unraveling the mystery of what is to come.'
Kirwin’s heart sank a little when Master Geir told him why he had called him away from the battle: to place nurse. They were going to help evacuate as many people as they could, when he could be better used stopping the enemies already at the door. “If we do get them out of here in time Master Geir, how are we going to evacuate them? We don’t have room in all of our ships for them, and I doubt the Republic, or what’s left of it, will be here in time to get them out.” He said as he followed the older Jedi through the hallways. “The city is being bombarded, as is the building, if you couldn’t tell by the tremor just now. Where are we going to take them?”
Dust and debris shook off of the ceiling as they walked down the hallway. Kirwin pulled on the edge of his hood to keep the falling dust out of his eyes and face. The heat vision of his cybernetic eye allowed him to see and follow Geir though his down pulled hood. It was when they neared their destination that Kirwin remembered he had left his rifle in the Main Lab. He mentally kicked himself for not remembering to grab it as they left the room. And he couldn’t go back and get it now they were too far away from the main lab and time was of the utmost importance. But Kirwin had a nagging thought that he was going to regret not having brought his rifle with him.
In all honesty, Kirwin made a valid point, but he was only seeing what he wanted to see. Such was a fault in many young Jedi in these troubling times. It was something he, himself, had once struggled with in his younger years, but having walked this galaxy for more than 80 years now, he had learned a great number of things.
It was true that the enemy pressed forward from the hangar. That there stood little to no chance that all the ill and injured could be saved. That there was little chance of aide from what may have existed of the Republic. But even in these grave circumstances, the Jedi could not give up nor surrender. They would not give up nor surrender. They had to save as many as they could, even if the odds were so heavily stacked against them. It was their charge. They were the keepers of peace in the galaxy. The defenders of those unable to defend themselves. That was their calling and it was now that the calling was as obvious as it has ever been.
The pain of death and anguish cried out in horror from all around them as the facility shook once more. This attack was an organized effort and the Jedi and Republic were anything but organized. They'd been caught with their pants down in a manner of speaking and now they were suffering the consequences of their ignorance. No . . . the innocent people of Honoghr were suffering those consequences. Even so, Geir knew he couldn't let that hinder them here.
"And should there be an attack from a direct other than the hangar, who then will defend those that can not defend themselves? Do you think an attack as organized as this will come simply from one front?" Geir's question came across sternly and he continued. "Trust me, young Kirwin. There is a alternative means to exit this facility. The facility had it built a number of years ago and it is there we will find the safety for the sick and injured. Once they are safe, we can think of returning." This is something he knew Kirwin would not want to hear. He was young and headstrong as he, himself, once was. He wanted to be in the action. Wanted to be that "hero." It was only natural.
As they rounded the corner into another hallway, Geir barked some orders to the doctors and nurses the struggled to keep their composure. They would begin moving the patients, and do so quickly. They had to move quickly. They had to move now. Their time was running short. Geir could sense it. Something dark was coming. Something that carried a great anguish and death with it. It was a palpable wave of dark side energy from the distance and it was drawing closer at an alarming rate.
Geir cast a glance to Kirwin to see if he felt the same ominous feeling he did as he unfastened a single lightsaber hilt from its hook loop fastener at his right hip.
Hearing Geir’s explanation as to why they were not joining the current fight going on both excited him and disheartened him even more. Yes, the attack appeared decently organized, with the occupying of everyone in the hangar while shutting the facility power down. But why would they want to attack the sick and helpless? He didn’t understand the desire or reasoning behind it. But that was why he had decided to stick with the Jedi Master, because he was sure that he could learn a thing or two about insight or understanding situations like this with his guidance.
Kirwin was a little taken aback when Geir started barking orders at staff members like he owned the place. He understood the urgency of the situation, and he was sure the workers did too, any yelling at people to move doesn’t always work. Kirwin walked over to a worker who was struggling to help a patient up into a hoverchair. Being stronger than the woman he easily secured the patient and patted the worker on her shoulder as she rushed her ward away. He had been helping another patient get out of his bed and to another staff member when he felt it: the feeling that someone or something was on the hunt. It brought the same impending feeling he had felt earlier in the hangar before the Sith appeared.
“Geir, do you feel-?” his question was cut short as he turned to see the man’s lightsaber hilt in hand. Kirwin reached down to his holster to realize he had never re-clasped the piece of leather that held his pistol in place. Luckily the firearm was still there and hadn’t fallen out during his run from the hanger to here. Kirwin stood off center of Geir in the hallway and placed his right hand onto the handle of his DL-44, ready to quickdraw whatever showed its face from down the hall.
